Why use sport psychology?

Research states that to be the best in sport you have to have high levels of skill and fitness. Until recently this was the basis for the training that athletes undertook. More recently however the psychological aspect of sport has come into play and more and more athletes are dedicating parts of their training to the mental side of their performance.

For example Tiger Woods the worlds No.1 golfer started using sport psychology techniques at the tender age of 13 and continues to use them to this day. Jack Nicklaus used mental imagery before every single shot he played and England rugby international Jonny Wilkinson admits to listening to a mental rehearsal cd before each game he plays. With compelling evidence like this, it is surprising that still there are top-flight athletes out there who don’t work on the mental side of their game. Can you imagine how good they could be if they did!

There are many possible reasons why people still steer clear of sport psychology and involving it within their training schedule. The main ones are probably a fear of the unknown, a lack of funding, a lack of time and confusion on what works best.   At FordSports Psychology we believe we can help any athlete at any standard fit sport psychology into their schedule successfully and therefore allow them to fulfil their true sporting potential.
