Here are some basic psychological principles that if you stick to will help improve your performance.
1) When thinking about any aspect of your game off and on the playing area, think about doing it well and think about enjoying yourself.
2) Find a Pre shot and Pre match routine that works and stick to it . Think about what you did before the good performances and then apply this to every competition.
3) Every time you practice or train make it as real to competition as possible.
4) Stay in the present - focusing on your breathing will bring you back if you start thinking ahead or about the past.
5) In target sports such as golf, be target orientated in practice and on the course. Any thoughts of technique and mechanics should be kept for the closed season. The human body performs best in sport when we just react to the target, compared to thinking about it and then reacting.
6) Set yourself targets and a practice/competition schedule.
7) Post match – analyse performance and then ponder on only the positive - everything else is history.
